Mahar, Vancil Advance to U.S. Senior Amateur
Local golfers Randy Mahar and Steve Vancil advanced to play in the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at a qualifying event held July 18 at Illahe Hills Country Club in Salem. The championship proper is set for Aug. 27-Sept. 1 at The Kittansett Club in Marion, Mass.

Mahar, from Portland, was the only player to shoot under par in the 18-hole qualifier finishing with a 1-under par 71. He went out with a 36, a front nine that included two bogeys and a pair of birdies. Mahar posted two more birdies, offset by a single bogey, to post a 35 on the back nine.
Vancil, of Happy Valley, posted even par 72 in his round. His front and back nines were similar – recording one bogey and one birdie on each side.
Larry Watts (Springfield) was 1-over par and William Winter II (Portland) shot 2-over par to finish as 1st and 2nd alternates respectively.
The next USGA qualifying event the OGA will administer is on Aug. 1 for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. That 18-hole competition will be played at Oswego Lake Country Club.
